Future Blocks
Created by Haunts Collective

Future Blocks is an interactive installation consisting of multiple quilt panels made from used plastic (cellophane, bubblewrap, etc.), and filled with dried flowers and ice. The audience is invited to write on a slip of paper a note to their future selves, which is then added to the quilt pockets, creating a mosaic of different messages to the future, embedded into the quilt. The piece is weather dependent; the ice will melt or stay frozen depending on the temperature, creating the look of dropping or melting plastic, and changing the shape of the quilt squares.

The artists used plastic, an everyday material, that is an excess manifestation of the wild levels of consumption being encouraged across our planet. Plastic is a remainder, its life span stretches far beyond its use span. It sits at the landfill; it floats through the ocean.

Future Blocks asks participants to question their relationship to waste, remainders, and quickening geological change imposed by humans. What kind of future do you envision for yourself and your community?
